What does the Simpsons and Family Guy have in common?

What is the common factor in both of these T.V. shows? THE MAIN CHARACTER AND STORYLINE! Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin are two characters that are almost exactly alike. Peter and Homer both go to the bar with friends, although Homer's friend Moe owns the bar, that is one variation. Peter and Homer both get drunk and are fat stupid slobs that we continue to laugh at. Marge and Lois are both stay at home moms that want to break out and do something better than they are doing now. They are both horribly embarassed of their husbands. Marge has a young daughter named Maggie who is like Marge and just doesn't listen to Homer. Lois has a young son named Stewie. In most episodes he is trying to kill his mother. The rest of the chararcters such as Bart and Lisa and Meg and Chris, are all different characters. They all are very different.

Does the creator of Family Guy know that his main characters are EXTREMELY alike to the Simpsons characters?

Does the creator of The Simpsons know someone is copying most of his ideas?

This debate has actually been going on for a long time. Some people say that it is so obviously similar, that everything was stolen. Others, that it is quite different. I can't find the link, but I saw a movie blog be Seth Macfarlene, talking to Matt Greoning. They both said that their ideas were similar. They keep them the same, because they get the most hits as a comedy. And if the Simpsons had so much success, why not have a similar plot setting directed at a more mature audience. I'll try and find the link to the video though.

There are many similarities between the two, and this subject has actually been criticized quite a bit. I've seen complete episode plot lines that seem to be exactly the same in every way. There's a really good YouTube video showcasing this idea, it pretty much says that family guy is just a total copy of the simpsons-- but it gives actual footage to back the idea up!

Here it is: Family Guy Steals from The Simpsons Part 1 http://youtube.com/watch?v=zZnNsbtsUV0

Family Guy Steals from the Simpsons Part 2

They are both really great videos for your topic. Enjoy!

Thanks for the comment on my blog. No I do not listen to the little mermaid soundtrack. I like the Titanic soundtrack. the soundtrack to Garden State, Bring it on ( I like Jock Jams ), and the Lion King soundtrack ( the instrumental stuff NOT HAKUNA MATATA ! )
As for the Simpsons and Family Guy I don't watch these shows because my little brothers aren;t allowed to see them. My luike is restricted to Treehouse T.V and Seame Street so I can't comment on the similarities.

Pfffffttt Little Mermaid. WTF ?

Hey if it is a successful formula - why not use it again - we see that in the genre repetition on tv, film etc. It is good to be unique, but there are only a few new ideas for media out there.....
